Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a small reverse osmosis filter on the market for handling small amounts of water, I only have nano tanks and do not require a ton of water at once so would prefer not to spent 500.00 on one of the big ones? Not sure if there is even such a thing but thought I'd ask. Thanks!

beertech

Marinescape sells the Aquasafe units for less than $200 (I'm not sure of the exact price). Give them a call.

If its for a nano and you don't want to spend a lot upfront bottled water would be the way to go. Otherwise like Beertech said, you can get RO/DI units for under $200. Thats how much mine was.

Hookup

Ottawa Inverts stocks these as a regular item... ranging with options in price from around $200 up to a bit over $300 for a "tricked out high-end" unit.  They also stock a full set of replacement parts and media, which is very handy cause when you need it, you do not want to wait for an order...

I agree with severum go with bottled water for your small tank.

Bluepointer; I guess we shold have asked this question right off the bat to avoid the debates around RO/DI systems vs Bottled water.

So here's the question "How much water are you changing each week/month?"

My assumption was multiple (2 or 3) nano systems, and a nano tank can range from 10gal - 30gal... so I had you pegged for around 50+ gallons of water, doing 5gal per week changes... In that range, $200 for an RO/DI system takes about 1year to pay back your capital investment...

The big point here is your $500 budget/limit/concept is very high.  As said there are loads of systems, that can produce a tone or a little, water within the $200 - $300 range depending on tricks, toys and add-ons.

Some RO/DI units are not as effective as others, but honestly, i'm not an expert in what makes a quality RO/DI unit vs a Crappy one...   I was kind of hoping one of the people on here who know about RO/DI's could post some of the "major features" you want to have and/or avoid when looking at buying an RO/DI. (hint, hint guys...)

hi everyone, thanks for the help and suggestions!

Sorry to be so tardy in my reply, I was away until just recently and didn't think to check back in. Yes you are right Hookup, I only have 2 nano-tanks, a 12 and 14 gal for now. I guess I have to give some thoughts to bottled versus RO/DI. So far, I haven't had problems but I am looking to avoid future ones. What I don't want is a crazy system that has to be fixed to a main line as my place is small and all the taps are used fairly regulary for other purposes. Something that attaches temporaily would be great, but that might mess it up. Perhaps I just have to wait for a bigger place. Anyway, mostly just thinking out loud (so to speak). Prob should follow the suggestion and stick with bottled water for now.

Anyway, thanks again everyone!

My 2 cents...

We have an RO/DI from Marinescape and it has paid itself many times in the past year... Why?
We make our own RO/DI for the aquarium AND our own RO for the water cooler dispenser.
Also bought about 3-yr supply of replacement filters on the internet for $40...
I call that a gooooood deal!!!

now since, i too Only have nanos running. i just stick to bottled water and good salt. and boom-bap no problems. i find the choice of salt makes a huge diff. thanks to az he convinced me to change from crappy red sea to tropic. i noticed big change in just 2 water changes... now thats bad ass. but if i had my old tanks set up as well, id fork the cash and pay 200-300. cuz like barabe stated it's drinkable too. and it'll pay itself off in under a year
