I dont think they are ugly and irritating!! They are a great way to express emotion in an otherwise very dry text! Sometimes inserting a or a makes all the difference in tone to the reader who may otherwise assume something that is not correct!

I like the original posters suggestion and I am all for it

Could be your browser settings on the BB to not download Images to conserve bandwidth.

Those who don't want to use them don't have to.  But the rest of the world seems to enjoy using them.  The more the merrier.
