Well, I thought I was going to try fishless cycling but can't seem to find ammonia anywhere in the town I live.  I have called every store in Embrun Russell and Metcalfe that might have it and no luck.  If anyone has tried fishless cycling and purchased ammonia, where did you get it??

Thanks Dave!  I'll phone around a few tomorrow and see if I can find it in Ottawa.  There's a home hardware in Russell, but no luck there.

The ammonia is acting as a substitute for fish urine. Doesn't have to be fish urine, though.
-thankful for a tankfull-

The product both Dave and I have used is called "Old Country".  It's a simple household ammonia cleaner.

It comes in a yellow and red bottle, and I've seen it in most of the Home Hardware stores I've been to.

I know for a fact that the Home Hardware on Bank @ Heron has it

i guess thats true LOL so theoretically peeing in the living room TANK for about a month should cycle your tank as well

Ummm YUK...

I wonder how well that would work, who wants to test it out?

Another one that is good is AMEX. I found mine at Canadian Tire, Walmart and Corner convenience stores.

Somehow, I just can't picture myself doing that!

What is the recipe for this fishless cycle??  I have a bottle in the laundry cupboard.  Got it from Walmart in the cleaning isle.  I think Ihave read this on line somewhere.  Does it really work??

Marc

Check out the cycling article on the website's front page. There is a description of fishless cycling in there and 2 links to even more detailed articles.

Any plain ammonia will do as long as it is 100% pure ammonia. Don't use ammonia with additives such as perfumes (lemon) etc.

dpatte

Ensure that if you use ammonia, that it is only ammonia, and has no colouring or fragrances added. Those would kill the fish.

As a side issue, I just noticed yesterday that cloths i bought for cleaning my tanks have antibiotics agents added. These, in fact, would make a tank virtually useless.

Why are companies ignoring studies that say too much use of antibiotics causes new strains of diseases to occur.

Some companies have no morals it seems.

You also don't want ammonia with any surfactants in it.  You'll know if you shake the bottle up, if there is a lot of surface foam that is created that doesn't dissipate quickly, there are surfactants in the product.

Surfactants=dead fish

The Home Hardware on Bank at Heron has Old Country ammonia.  I was in there today!
