Deaths

Hey guys,

I've been getting some in explained deaths in my tank.

I've had 3 guppys, 3 ammino shrimp, and 2 panda corys die.


This wasn't all at once, it was gradually.


The ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites are all under control. They are all 0, except nitrates which are under 20ppm.

The ph was tested at 7,

The KH was at 3 drops

I don't have a test for gh.

At the Highest stocking, there was

5 CPD
3 Guppys
2 panda corys
3 ammino shrimp

It's a ten gallon tank, with very little plants.
Mostly moss, and a Pothos in the filter


Anyone know what could be going on

How often and how much water changes?  How much do you feed? Any changes prior to the beginning of this?

No real changes.

The panda was the last death, and I had not done anything different. It was the day before water change day, and my params where completely fine

I usually do 20-30% water changes weekly.

I usually feed the tank a small pinch of big bites that had soaked for about 20 mins

The night before the last panda went missing, I fed them that, plus one algea waffer

Do you watch them eat?  Maybe someone is a pig and the rest are starving.  I see that a lot.

Also whats the temperature?  Oxygen issue?

I don't watch them eat from beginning to end. But I stick around until I've seen them all eat something.


Don't see any of them gasping for air, and the temperature is usually between 72-75 degrees

Do you heat the new water before to do the change ?

Usually I do, but the heater broke.

However, since the water is left at cook temp overnight, it's about 72 degrees. That's very close
To what I keep my tank at.

Also,
The die off hasn't lined up with my water changes

Hello and happy Holidays. I think that I would proceed with changing the food . I am a big believer in rotating foods and I do use a lot of Gel Foods.    Hopefully you will succeed to solve the mystery .

I do know that when I kept goldfish in with a Pleco  . I always worried about constipation from Algae Wafers contributing to swim bladder problems

I do switch out food, but it's a lot of dry food.
I switch up bug bites, betta pellets, algea wafers, freeze dried blood worms, and some high quality flake food. I have a bunch of other frozen foods, I just don't use them as my main source of food.

Funny enough, I fed the panda Cory a algea waffer before he disappeared.

Do you think frozen food is a better choice?

If you have some frozen food I would try.    It seems that something is causing stress for your fish . Would it be possible to consider upgrading  your tank size.  Possibly a 15 or 20 gallon tank if you have the space. The bigger the better is a always a good decision when keeping a tank. I know that this is not always easy .

Did you introduce a new food around the time of the deaths started occurring?

Have you checked to make sure the food didn't spoil or looks/smells different from previous purchases?

Did you add any new fish or plants into the tank? If yes, did you quarantine them?

Did you notice any odd behaviour from the fish?

It could come from your hands as well.... are you using any nourishment cream for your hands or anything else that could be harmful for fish ?

i would bet it is parasitic in nature. did you quarantine and deworm your fish before you added them to tank?
that would explain the seeming randomness in the victims and timetable.
