Has anyone local had good success growing rotala macrandra & if so what were / are you secret methods, this is one of the most challenging plants i`ve come across, with everything i`ve read & tried i`ve had marginal success & would really like to have this plant in it`s full glory in my tank.

I haven't got any yet, but if you can spare a sprig charlie, I'd love to try to increase the pool of keepers ;)

Actually, Rotala Macrandra is a very hardy plant, just make sure the light doesn't get block off by other plants. I lost all mine when I gone for my vacation because my tank was a jungle! There's an open secret in Asia to keep this plants. Over there, they have special high Ca tabs put under the soil. My friend keeps his using the xDx soil from the Japanese guy with the root tab and MH lighting. and of course the N is on low side, his Macrandra just like a deep Red Butterfly as they called the plant in Asia.

p.s. of course, low N will cause some side effect on your other plants. But the xDx soil has some magic touch! I think you know what xDx is?  ;)

The low nitrate is tricky as you said, i did notice issues with the other plants when trying to bottom out the N for the macrandra, still have not found the balance.
I cant say i know about xDx soil , is this from  Amano.

Yes, you replace the x with the first alphabet, then you know the brand name, just don't want to do promotion for them and get banned!   :D Ha! Ha!

Not sure where you got yours, when I had mine, they are quite easy to grow. My N is in medium range all the time. Just the lower part or after I gave them a big hair cut, it's kind of yellowish to rusty colour. When they grew close to the top, I got the red but not super red colour. I guess you saw mine when you stopped over!

You're silly jetstream, I can't imagine getting banned for saying something such as Takashi Amano's secret recipes from his store ADA. Do you actually buy his stuff? That was the incredulity of someone clearly jealous. :)

If you are having trouble balancing the parameters to meet the needs of the majority of your plants along with this macandra that has more diverse needs, don't you see what is happening here? Both of you Charlie and jetstream, need to give in to that little voice in your heads and set up another tank that allows you to manage different conditions without adversly affecting the remainder of your "normal" plants. ;)

So hop to it, both of you! ;D
