mechanical filtration?

Who is running a mechanical filter I used to only run a sump packed with live rock and cheato. I moved and havent gotten around to setting up a sump. So I recently set up a large overflow filter with one carbon filter and one phosponge. In half a day my water was much clearer and corals seem a little brighter.

Just wondering who is running filters, have they helped or actually taken good stuff out with the bad.
