All skimmer are different. You don't have to worry about having to keep your water level too low. If the skimmer requires a lower water level than your sump has in that chamber, you just put the skimmer on a stand made of egg crate or something. The only real potential problem is not having deep enough water. If you design a sump where that chambers water level is too low there is nothing to do about that. So just make sure you have enough water depth in that chamber. That is unless you have a HOB or recirculating skimmer then water level doesn't even matter.

whats the maximum water level the skimmer should be? no point on putting a 45 gallon if all i can put in it is 3" of water.
