    2012 Giant Auction

Our annual Giant Auction will be held at the  Jack Purcell Centre on Sunday the 4th of March starting at 12:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome - both OVAS and non-OVAS members.
Item setup and viewing starts at 10:00 am.  All items being auctioned off must be registered and present at the auction by 12:00.  No new items will be accepted after 11:30.

    General information
All items being auctioned are placed on tables in the viewing area.  During the auction the tables will be auctioned off in an order.
If you wish to have your item(s) sold at the start of the auction, we will have a priority table this year.  The cost is $1 per item and this fee must be paid before your item is placed on the priority table.
For the Giant Auction the starting bid is $2.  If necessary, please group your items to ensure that your lots have a $2 value.

    Raffle tickets
We will be selling raffle tickets during the auction.  $1 for 1, $2 for 3 and $5 for 10.  Prizes include a brand new 75 gallon aquarium and many more items.

    Item registration
The following methods are available to register your items.

    • On-line registration of your items.  Click here to submit your items for the auction.  If you have more than 10 items for sale, please fill out as many forms as needed.
    • PM me with your list – including the description and minimum bid.
    • If you do not pre-register your items, please download the Registration Form attached to this post, complete it and give it to me before 11:30.

The following items WILL NOT be accepted at this year's Giant Auction

    • Used heaters
    • Used light bulbs
    • Plastic plants
    • Used/opened filter media
    • Used airline tubing
    • Magazines

We are limiting the number of identical items that a single vendor can sell to 3 items, please group your items accordingly.  If you want to sell more than 3 bags of an identical item, you have the choice of either grouping your items to create 3 lots, removing the extra item(s) or donating the extra item(s) to OVAS.

    Identifying your items
Pre-printed labels are provided for all auction items and will be handed out when you arrive at the registration desk.
For all items the starting bid is $2.00. If you would like to start the bidding for you item at a higher amount please indicate the minimum bid on your registration form.

    Packaging your items
Please package your items carefully!  Bags can leak, light bulbs can break, and fish can jump out of pails - just to mention a few possibilities.
All fish placed for auction must be in an appropriate container:

    • Proper fish bags (preferred method)
    • Glass jars of an appropriate size (Acceptable, but should be avoided if possible for safety reasons)
    • Plastic buckets

    Bidding
For those who are new to the club the auction works as follows:

    • The auctioneer will read the lot number, description and starting bid amount.
    • Anyone who wishes to bid on the item is asked to raise their hand at the start of the bidding.
    • The auctioneer will increase the price and the last person with their hand raised wins the item.
    • All items must be paid for immediately after the bidding has ended for that item.  Payment and item pickup is done at the Treasurers location on the right hand side of the meeting room.

    Auction fees
Any items preregistered before 8:00pm on Saturday the 3rd of March will be charged a 25% commission.  Any items registered after this time will be charged a 35% commission fee, NO EXCEPTIONS.

    Donations
If you wish to donate the proceeds from any of your auction item please indicate this to me before the auction.  Any unsold donated items must be picked up after the mini-auction is over – OVAS will not be responsible for any items left at the meeting.

    Vendor payment
Please see me after the auction to be cashed out.  I will provide you with a receipt which will be taken to the Treasurer for payment.  If you are unable to stay to the end of the auction please contact me and alternate arrangement will be made for you to receive your funds.

    Note
Please respect your fellow club members - excessive talking during the auction is distracting to both the auctioneers and the people wishing to purchase items.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.[/list]

For all those plant Gurus out there, remember that beautiful Starfire aquarium that was set up for us at January's meeting?

It's going to be up for grabs!  Tank, Lighting, Soil, Rocks and wood...it could be all yours!  PLUS the auction has always been a great place to buy plants to fill up this gem!!

    Here's a Reminder:

    Fishnut

    Here's another Teaser...

We'll be setting up a nice Raffle Prize with this little fishy!

    gvv

Will we have saltwater tank for frags this year?

    Fishnut

We'll see how many frags we end up with.  I don't believe it's in the plans this year (short on volunteers) but we're very adaptable if someone steps up to set it up AND we have enough of a demand for it.

    adamsarmywife

I'm hoping to make it this year, will anyone be putting in any SW fish?

    I sure hope to come!

Karen here, still sad that I had to back out of volunteering, but I still want to donate snails (ramshorns, MTS) for the auction.  How do I do this?  Show up at 10 with tubs of snails?  Also, if anyone can suggest good ways to capture them?

Drop in a piece of zucchini, lettuce or algae wafer and they'll gather
like moths to a light. Bag them up and bring them in :).

Thanks to all of the executive, volunteers, sellers and buyers who made this Giant Auction a success once again. Thanks also to those who made donations so that my job of selling raffle tickets would be an easy one.

I sold everything that I brought. I only bought a couple of bags at the auction itself. Then I took my profits out into the hallway, met the raffle winner who had won the aquarium donated by Fish Tail Aquariums,  ended up buying that aquarium and then proceeded to break it while loading it into my vehicle OUCH!

Contact me if you would like a broken designer aquarium  8).

    Nerine

Oh no!!! maybe it can be a nice planter now???  :((( so sad!!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out today and volunteered!!! Without you guys this auction would not have been possible!!! We got out of there EARLY!! I'm home and it's 8:35!! WOOHOO!! :D I was going to go out to eat, but decided I should get some sleep instead hahahaha

Thank you again everyone!! And a HUGE thank you to our sponsors and friends of OVAS!!

Life is too short to wake up with regrets.  So love the people who treat you right.  Forget about the one's who don't.  Believe everything happens for a reason.  If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.  If it changes your life, let it.  Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

    Again thank you to all.

It was a good day. A big thanks to all the auctioneers, the auction host, and everyone else to make this go by rather smoothly; moving 1200 item in 6 hours is quite an achievement.

Also great to see a good attendance by our fellow hobbyist from SAM/Montreal. Glad you came out and brought some interesting items with you.

I for myself didn't plan on buying much, but a few things caught my interest and made it into my box, a nice pair of not often seen apistos for example. Winning one of the raffles kept the mood up, and somehow I ended up with that tank full of dirt on my backseat ... :)

Glad to hear all went well ! I was all set to volunteer and participate and was really excited about it all but it was my birthday weekend  and the plan was to celebrate it on Sat and volunteer/get my hands on stuff on Sunday but alas my friends surprise me with a full-day trip to Tremblant at the Birthday Dinner and this was my chain of reactions:  ??? >:( :(  :) :-* . I just couldn't say no since they had everything booked and planned!

The whole day I was thinking about the auction and how I could have picked up a pair of clown killis and some of those awesome bags of plants I saw on the list of items! I still had a fun birthday weekend though - hard to be sad when you're boarding down the mountain :) Attending the Auction would've made it PERFECT but maybe next year!

Regardless, sorry again I couldn't help this year Nerine but looks like it all went well! Hope to be there next year! Promise! Congrats Rob btw.. jealous! And i'll be hunting down those people who won the plants to get trimmings soon  :P

I would like to thank everyone for all their help.
For my first time as Auction Chair, I think everything went smoothly except for a few minor problems.
What a long day and hectic at times.
    Thanks again.

Hi everyone. I would just like to thank everyone who brought plants to the auction on sunday. I got home from the auction and set up my 40 breeder with all the plants I bought and used those great aquascaping tools I came home with. Thanks Errol !! I will be posting my build in the next few days. It was my first big auction and I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the day a great success. I would love to help out next year if you need my help. Thanks.

Yesterday was my first giant auction. That was a lot of fun! I bought so many things, spent more than I planned, and I still think perhaps I should have gone for more plants and pick up more shrimps. It is probably a good balance as I am starting to run out of real estate...

To the OVAS exec and those who spent the whole day making yesterday's event so wonderful, ** THANK YOU **

    You have made my day!

my throat is sore too!  :(
but I put the substrate and plants and filters on a tank today ....just temporarily while I get my new project up and running

It was awesome having so many dedicated OVAS members donate their time and energy to the auction.

Agreed - very refreshing to get away from the key board community & meet, share hobby talk , put faces to names & actually find out about each other  :P

It was fantastic. Thanks for everyone who volunteered and participated in making it so. I came home with everything I'd been looking for and then some. What a day.

I also came home with the eheim 2217 I had my eyes on, and considering I got it for a steal/fraction of the price of a new one, my 125g SA community, and me, are very pleased. Not sure if I volunteer next time I'll be able to take advantage of some of these great deals.

I was one of the volunteer auctioneers and when an item came up that I wanted to bid on I passed it to one of the other auctioneers and then stepped forward to bid on it.
     ;D

Wayne was behind the food counter most of the time but he just waved his bidding card vigorously to get our attention when he was bidding.

Even Peter who was frantically typing and trying to keep up with the fast paced action managed to get his card in the air a few times.

I had my eye on that too.  I must have missed it (been talking??   :D), because I don't remember it even comming up.

It was probably the third or fourth item that went up for bid, and I was lucky enough to snag it for $80.  Now my 125g has two 2217s running, one from each end. Many thanks to the seller who put this item up for auction, it was in mint condition, and they even gave my son the original receipt, with warranty still on it, when he went to pay for it.

Wow, now that is a really great seller.  I didn't get to the auction until about 1:00, so I missed some of the early stuff.

I volunteer to sell raffle tickets so that I don't have time to put my hand up!!!! ;D

Getting lots of views on my photo blog of the day's event.  Hopefully all of that attention will translate into ticket sales for the OVAS Earth Day Event. I've paid my $5 for a ticket.  A steal of a deal!!! Let's make the Earth Day event another memorable OVAS moment!

Yeah, I almost missed out because I spent about a half hour searching for a parking spot. When I finally walked in they were just getting ready to begin the auction.  Everything else was great, my only complaint of the day was the lack of parking.

Parking is one of the cons with that location, maybe we can keep an eye out for a location that has the pros of Jack Purcell with good parking & suggest them to the club
The pros i think are space & cost, city facilities are way less than other similar facilities.

McNabb Community Centre has tons of parking, is central and is city run...no idea what the cost/availability is like though.
