Off to Big Al's (Innes) tonight to pick up my first cichlids (African - yellow lab fry).

Could someone tell me what fish food I should pick up for them while I'm there, as well as the best feeding "process" (time, amount, frequency, etc).

Many thanks!

Josh

You could also feed them Spirulina flakes or sticks.  I feed my guys twice a day.

NLS has quite a marketing campain doesnt it. Feed your fish NLS or else! And nothing but NLS or the majic mojo will be broken!

I am very happy wth "HBH 8 Veggie Flake" I get at BA's. It is the third food I have tried and I plan to stick with it for now. My Psedutrophous seem happy with it and it put an end to the stringy poop issues I was having from Nutrafin.

I get my cichlid food here:

You've got a lot of options here.  Most Mbuna are mainly vegetarians, and their diet should reflect that.  Yellow Labs are a little more omnivoriish tho, and can have a little more meat in their diet.

I currently have about 8 kinds of cichlid food in rotation.  Here are my thoughts:

For a staple, Spirulina Sticks are a good choice, as are a mostly veggie based flake (The HBH flakes that Kennyman suggested are great).  Supplement with an occasional meatier meal such as sinking shrimp pellets (My labs love those things).

I wouldn't really recommend anything from the basic Nutrafin line, although I use a couple Nutrafin Max items (Spirulina sticks, for example).

You also can't go wrong with New Life Spectrum Cichlid formula; it's expensive, but it's such a "perfect" food in the minds of so many people that you can pretty much buy that and never think about nutrition for your cichlids again.

I've also used HBH "African Cichlid Attack" which is a bit meatier, and might work well for labs.  I use it for bigger Africans.

Personally, I don't like generic flake food for cichlids (even food marked as "cichlid food") and wouldn't recommend it.  I guess I mean anything from Nutrafin or Wardley here.  As I mentioned before, HBH is a good brand if you want to go the flake route.

You can also make your own!  This is going to be my next experiment.  I'm thinking of using a recipe based on the ones here:  http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/food_recipes.php

Let's not get silly.  You already got your props in my first post.  Doesn't mean I like you anymore now than I did before I bought "the best" fishfood around.
