Converting to paludarium?

I have a planted 80 gallon wth a dirt substrate and 4 T4HO which has been a nuisance because of the algae that develop when I am travelling for work. The lack of water changes and adding of fertiliser cause the glass, ornaments and plants to have green and brush algae. I am sick and tired of having to start all over again after each trip so I am considering to convert to a paludarium where the water part is partly covered by an overhang.

The questions I have are the following:
1) do you think that when blocking part of the light and using low light plants in the water part only, this will deter the formation of algae?
2) would I need to have terrestrial/semi-aquatic plants rooted in water to help with creating a nutrient balance?
3) would it be best to use a dirt substrate or an inert substrate?

Thanks in advance!
