Ok, I can't seem to get my avatar to the right size without it being insanely small.

I used photoshop, made sure it was under 100 pixels wide and saved it as a jpeg copy.

How do I get it under 10kb? Its so grainy its ridiculous.

Funny, I was just doing a new avatar tonight too :)

I know what you mean...I wish I could figure out for sure why one 100x100 jpg was under 10k and another is way over...

You may have too many colors. Convert your jpeg to gif (256 colors or less) and see.

I doubt it, maybe just up the compression on the jpeg filter between the values of 25-50.  Photoshop defaults 80+.

...heck, open the file up in MSPAINT  (startmenu->run), and save-as the image.  It'll automatically shrink it down, even if you do nothing!

Nice avatar - who's the artist, it's very adorable.

If you are using photoshop. Go to save for web and that will reduce picture size by 70% while keeping picture intact.

Another handy tool is a Powertoy for resizing images, called Image Resizer and found here:
