Shrimp keeping in the aquarium hobby has gained momentum in recent years. It is fascinating to watch these small invertebrates scavenge, interact and colonize in a suitable aquarium environment. They come in all sorts of attractive colours and patterns that are sure to catch your eye, with the most popular and readily available being the Red Cherry Shrimp. Not all shrimp are equal, and attention should be given to their particular care requirements to avoid disasters in an aquarium.<\/p>\n

As a biologist, Sid\u2019s objective approach to shrimp keeping has allowed him success in keeping and breeding both Neocaridina and Caridina genus freshwater aquarium shrimp. Through his experience, including successes and failures, he has derived tested methods that are particularly useful to beginners but can assist anyone in keeping shrimp.<\/p>\n

The presentation given to OVAS<\/a> thoroughly described the art of shrimp keeping, with attention given to setting up a stable ecosystem that provides good water quality and feeding opportunities that meet the needs of these critters. The presentation highlights the extensive breeding lines of both Neocaridina and Caridina, the different equipment required, how to properly establish a shrimp tank, the effects of different specialized substrates on the water quality, mixing water, as well as how to prepare your own shrimp foods.<\/p>\n

Whether you wish to start your first shrimp tank, develop your own line of shrimp with a new colour pattern, or anything in between, shrimp keeping provides many opportunities to enjoy a very cool little creature that deserves a little more attention when venturing into your local fish store.<\/p>\n

OVAS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the aquarium hobby in Ottawa and its surrounding areas. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in home aquariums and provides many benefits such as discounts at local retailers, easy access to the aquarium community, attend events, and more! The club meets at least once a month at Tom Brown arena from September through to May and maintains the\u00a0ovas.ca<\/a>\u00a0website and online forum.<\/p>\n
