Noisy AC filter...what are my options?

I have an AC300.    It alternately runs quiet and then starts buzzing and will buzz for days if I don't do something.   Unplugging and plugging back in usually works.    Sometimes after the water change it  won't start until I shut the power off and on.

I have taken out the motor and cleaned the impeller, that was quite a while ago and it wasn't even dirty.

Is it just getting old?   Is there a guaranteed fix and what is it?

When it does this I start pricing canister filters......

Check the metal shaft that the impeller rests on. If that is worn the motor is garbage. Also check the plastic housing that holds the impeller down. That is a removable piece and can become dislodged sometimes.

The metal shaft is replaceable isnt't it? I always pull it out when I clean mine so I can get a toothbrush in to scrub the impeller chamber.

Could be  ???  I always thought is was epoxied into the motor housing but I have never tried pulling with a pair of pliers. I have a worn one in my fish junk closet. I will give it try  :)

edit; yep came right out. Thanks for the tip  :)

You're welcome.

You can buy replacements at any LFS. Beware the sticker shock though, I seem to remember it was around $5 for that little piece.

Thank you...  I will check all the pieces out.
