Replacement filters

Hi, I have a Penguin HOB filter and am using Penguin #C filters for it.  I was wondering if any of you know if the Walmart brand (Aquaclear I think) in the #3 filters are the same thing as the Penguin #C.  They are sginificantly cheaper and seem to say pretty much the same thing on the package than what my Penguin says...

Yeah they're Penguin filters without the bio wheel

If I remember correctly, the replacement filters are similar but not quite the same, but they will fit yes.

My question would be is there a quality difference?  From what I have read in the past often when it come to "no-name" products they are often rejects from a big company.  For example no name peas at Loblaws might have been Dole peas that did not meet there standard but are still very edible.  Is this a possibility?

Depends what you mean by quality. Like I said, they don't have the bio wheel, which is kinda the main selling point of the penguins, but other than that I haven't seen any defects with them.

But I don't have a biowheel do I? lol... I think I've seen biowheels before and I'm pretty sure I don't have one

Does your top have room for the biowheel? Cuz if not its a regent aquatech not a penguin

ooohhhh... I will have to take a closer look Matt as I'm not sure if it does have room for it or not.  What should I look for?  I presume there would be some type of slot where I would put the wheel.  Off the top of my head, I think the lid closes to tightly on the filter to be able to sport a biowheel.  I have been looking to find what the name brand was.  I figured it was a marineland since there is a "company" sticker on it that says to use Penguin #C replacement filters.  I will look into it when I get home.  the Penguin filters I bought did not come with a Biowheel though.. although it is probably sold in a different type of packaging.

I have one with a biowheel and where the water flows out you should see two little slots, one on each side, where the wheel would be fixed.  It would look like this http://www.marineland.com/products/consumer/con_penguinfilters.asp

Well now I know for sure that it doesn't have thos slots so it does not have a biowheel.

Actually the parts withe slots are removable so its possibly they're jsut not there right now

True enough there is like a little case that holds them.  I wish I was at home I'd try and take and post a pic of mine for you to compare.

After looking at this link I realized mine is an emperor which seems very similar.  [url][http://www.aquahobby.com/e_products.php/url]  You might be able to find what you have there.

if you really want to know if the walmart replacement filters fit into your filter just buy them bring it home and if it doesn't fit return them...walmart takes back anything

Just an FYI.. you can order the parts for the biowheels to convert your aquatech into a real penguin

You need a new filter top (to make room for the biowheels)
The biowheel brackets (which rest on your existing filter)
And of course.. the biowheels! (plus the bearings if they aren't included)

I did it with a "mini" just for the hell of it... worked just fine.
