On the surface of the water I have green bubbles....algae?
I'll take pics later and post...but it's really cool! they are in little groups of mounds of these things!

I actually have algae coating the inside of the glass which is fantastic and the water is GREEN

Does the sun shine on the tank for any part of the day.  ??? ??? I had something like that happen when the sun is low in the sky (this time of the year).

Nerine

nope, but the lights have been on for a week straight!

Sounds more like algae to me. You will probable still need a black out to get rid of it.

BigDaddy

It is likely GDA (Green Dust Algae).  When it gets really thick, it will not only blanket the glass, it will also put a layer across the water's surface and even on some plant surfaces.

Google it and tell us if you think that's it.

Nerine

hmm doesn't look like it!!

I wasn't able to take a pic yesterday will try tonight, it's really neat looking...
and I do NOT want to get rid of algae...I am growing it!

A mystery is always cool! Hope you figure out what it is!

I actually think it's pretty cool looking, myself! :)

It looks alot like floating BGA (cyanobacteria), which you need a blackout to remove.

That what I thought. You should be able to smell it, its quite strong and not so pleasant ....
be aware of the green side

Nerine

Ok, just curious, but is there a reason you are trying to grow algae?

I like the way it covers things...gives it an antiqued look. plus the green water is great cover for fry

BGA is it BGA if it has NO odor at all?
water is also crystal clear, not cloudy as it says most water is with BGA....

suggestions?

I was really curious that you have this in your tank.  I know you aren't allowed to swim in lakes with this stuff and that it killed a few dogs last year.

Here is a health article from NY:
http://www.health.state.ny.us/environmental/water/drinking/bluegreenalgae.htm

"Unpleasant tastes or odors are not reliable indicators of blue-green algal toxins or other toxic substances, because species producing bluegreen algal toxins may or may not also produce chemicals that affect the taste or odor of drinking water. Similarly, the absence of unpleasant tastes and odors does not guarantee the absence of blue-green algal toxins."

"they can form blooms that discolor the water or produce floating rafts or scums on the surface of the water."

If this is what it is - I wouldn't touch it if I were you.  I would have hubby do it.  I don't want to scare you but some of the risks of being exposed to it are scary.  Most mention showering or swimming in it - but still.
