Can someone shed some light for me on what the ceramic media does?  KLKelly, you say you use extra ceramic media - just wondering why?

I use a sponge (rinsed in tank water at most weekly water change), floss (change half every week) and one bag of ceramic media (rinse occasionally in tank water).  I have flourite and find that if I'm doing any gardening it stirs up the muck requiring more media rinsing than might be usual.

Thanks

Ceramic media is an excellent absorber of beneficial bacteria. The ceramic rings have tremendous surface area to attract and stick the bacteria onto, which as you know is very beneficial to a biological filtration system. The ceramic is very porous and the bacteria can penetrate the ring and reproduce at an amazing rate.
