Re algae blooms in SW environment.

I like the following link because of the pretty colours:

And now so that both Matt and I can be right  :?  cyanobacter (blue-green algae) can be red as well as blue-green, black, etc..

Isn't SW fun?

This is interesting topic... A lot of info...
But I don't understand why to make the BBS hatching so difficult? You just need glass can and air stone! If you are planning to get adult brine shrimp (not BBS), than you may try this approach, but I don't understand what advantages it will give you.
Or this is just the other way to start reef tank ?!

gvv: Maybe he really wants a reef tank for Christmas and wants the cycling out of the way before then.

BTW - For anyone else reading this thread who might think that Nemo would be a nice addition to their home at Christmas time, now is the time to start the SW tank cycling process to be ready for Christmas livestock (4-6 weeks minimum is a good cycling timeframe to plan for to reduce later livestock and reef problems).

Also when enquiring about those 400 watt MH lights, it is best to leave the "smoke hemp" t-shirt at home .

Mines been going for a week getting the salt stabilized.
I'm going to get the light and live rock today.  So yes nemo is on his way....woohoooooooooooooo

the question was about Raising BBS to adult stage , isn't it ?
hatching bbs is so simple, no matter what you do they do hatch :) :) (at differente rate but the do hatch)

raising them to adult stage is a waste of time at my point of view.

BigDaddy

Agreed.  There are many other live food types that are much easier to raise and harvest than adult brine shrimp.

kennyman

The whole point of this is
A) to continue to raise live food for my gobies, and If I ever find them, the Celebies Rainbow Fish. I feed live brine shrimp which I had been growing in pop-bottles. But now swithched to a bigger 10g because I hate these tippy, dirty noisy cutup platic bottles in my den
B) As Rockgarden says to keep myself entertained I thought I'd chuck some LR into the tank so I can get a test run at culturing it. And get my feet salty before I begin a reef tank project.
C)Because I can ;)

I am going to checkout LR tomorow and probly give it a try first with only the airline for circulation. If it gets too yucky I'll increase the circulation as suggested with the empty hob with a sponge over the intake.

Oh and I am not allowed to grow worms in the house. I already asked and the Mrs. says no go! She is already eyeballing my greenwater jar suspiciously. I liked that knife and fork bit Rockgarden. That was quite good heheh :D

zapisto

beside worm you have a lot of live food
- gamarus (nice little crustacea)
- daphnie
- copepod
etc...

the nutritional value of adult Brineshrimp suck (not talking here of newly hatched baby brineshrimp) compared to nutritional value of some other i just write .
Just to let you adult brineshrimp is the same as Fiber for us :) , facilitate the intestinal transit (dont make say what i did say, it is a good food , but variety is important and there is other live food who is a lot better)
think of it :)

kennyman

I'll look into those Zapisto. I do like my fiber . . . .  but a steak is nice for dinner now and then ;)

gvv

OK,

Than you should mention that it is not for food but to enjoy yourself :) Zapisto is 120% right, as brine shrimp is good only as soon as it hatched, otherwise... there should be cheaper sources, like bloodworms. At least it is easy to feed them  :D
Let's say, if I will plan the SW tank I will also tell my wife that I would like to have cost effective food sources

Good luck!
