Dear OVAS members,

I'm putting together a Canada ONLY Aquarium Auction web site.  Similar to aquabid.com but as anyone who's attempted to move live fish over the border it's more than risky and expensive.  So, I've decided to create place where Canadians can buy and sell aquatic goods in an auction format.  It's a entirely free auction ... so this will appeal to small retailers and personal sellers and buyers alike.

I've nearly completed the web site and would like a few individuals to assist in testing and giving recommendations.  If anyone has an hour to spare to help out this project, I would be most grateful.  There is no incentive I can offer volunteers because the web site is free for everyone...

If interested send an email to:

Sincerely,

Greg Turner

so it's going to be like an fish e-bay type thing?

Greg Turner

Exactly, aquarium goods (live or dry) ONLY... and Canadian ONLY.  Except, ebay charges for insertion fee, selling fee and other upgrade costs.  I will never charge for any listings... so you could post your F1 cichlids there at no cost to you.  It also serves somewhat of a classifieds except it's in an auction format.  I don't plan to make any money from this venture but I would like to see it to be successful as this would help increase the diversity and availability of aquatic goods in Canada.

I would like some input regarding it's domain name.  Here's what I'm considering:

aquariumauctioncanada.com
aquaauctioncanada.com

I prefer .com address instead of .ca due to the cost of .ca names.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Poustic

FYI - Not sure how much you were quoted for the .com domain, but just in case you still want to consider .ca, on this site you currently get 3 years registration on a .ca domain for $95 (taxes included).

aquariumauction.ca

Greg,

It's a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI.  At Domainsatcost.ca  .CA domains are $12.95 cdn per year.  Ovas.ca is registered there and has been since we registered it.  Domainsatcost.ca is a company based in Nepean.

Wow, $12 is a great deal... Thanks Marc.  This changes things, I would prefer .ca over .com for this.

I'm going for aquabay.ca then... If you say it outloud it nicely rolls off the tonge and it's nice and short.  I don't want to copy the aquabid.com guy and go with aquabid.ca.

Hi Greg,

Sounds like a grand idea! If you need anything checked for cross platform compatability, I'm a Mac guy, and I'd be happy to help any way I can. Now if you can just do something about the problems of shipping live stuff in the winter...

Best regards,

                     Ron

I like Aquabay.ca and think it's a Great Idea.
I can also help out with the site.

I dont think we should restrict it only to Canadians... there is nothing wrong with Yanks buying stuff from us if we're willing to ship it (:))

ambushman2j

isn't that usually upto the seller anyways?

artw

well thats exactly what I said.
if the seller wants to ship to the States more power to them.

I guess it'll work like ebay Canada little bit?

Greg Turner

Thanks for the feedback... I'm glad to see such interest in the project.  It's ready for testing now... so hopefully the launch will be a couple weeks.  Could use a couple more volunteers if anyones interested.

Yes, currently there is nothing to stop anyone from selling and/or bidding on anything from any country.  If Americans want to bid on stuff they can, and vise versa.  However, it's exackly like ebay.ca where you know that 99% of the stuff will be Canadian...  The point of the web site is to encourage a Canadian marketplace and central location for used aquatic stuff.
