Hornwort question

Can I put it in water that has salt in it? I use salt in my aquariums because this fish I do better with a little salt. Will this be ok in that kind of water?

Hornwort is hardy stuff.  Its not like you are putting it in brackish water or anything.

Unless you're adding Saltwater salt, it's not really "brackish" as defined in fishkeeping terms.

I'm sure the hornwort will be fine, after it's adapted.

A few days ago I put some younger steams of hornwort into 5 gallon quarantine tank (temporarily). Quarantine tank had some salt in it and a few other plants. Hornwort lost all the branches and within 48 hours all its remaining parts were almost disintegrated. There was perhaps one tablespoon of sea salt or a little more per five gallons. I've noticed twice similar results. From my experience the hornwort that I have does not tolerate salt very well. However I put some salt to other tanks in much smaller proportions and it is not affected at all.
You may test it with small branch and water from your tank for a few days.

If you manage to kill all of yours don't worry, I and others at OVAS can easily re-supply you at a very reasonable price .

lol, i paid 10 bucks for 2 stems of it, but they were long. This isnt see salt tho.

I'm sure ovas could definatly resuply me, but The drive from pembroke may be a lil pricy. LoL jk, our honda civic runs on air, 16 bucks in fuel got us to ottawa, all over the city, to my uncles in barhaven (he does roofing + works at the postal office) then to super pet and big als then home

but still, its kinda hard to get all over ottawa looking for a street.

I only ask this because I was gonna try it in my main 29 gal tank, but now im turning the fry tank into a low-lit, heavily planted tank.

ok thanks, I'll ask this, if I'm going to do a planted 10 g tank, what equipment should I get for it? whether it be chemicals, treatments, etc. Post anything I may or will need.

it depends on how much light, if you are going for low light, then a light bulb that is daylight, some gravel, and plants. medium light, you might have to get another bulb or two, add maybe dome ferts like excel and stuff. and high light, well get alot of lights, CO2, lots of plants, good gravel(flourite, eco-compleat), ferts from a plant store, of from the LFS if it is a smaller tank.

I only have 2 incandescent bulbs, and really I think if I leave em on long enough it'll be good.

Oh what do you mean GOOD gravel? isn't it just ornamental value or is there gravel now that releases stuff into the water for plants?

Ferts? arn't plant stores ferts for flowers and crap? that's all i seen there, nothing for water...

i would not sujest growing anything more then java moss, and java fern under incandecent bulbs. if you want to gerow more plants go get yourself some screw in flourecents, and ho for the highest wattage posible. incandecent doesn't produce nearly enought light for plants.

good gravel is gravel for plants. i can keep good stuff that plants need in the gravel so that they can use them later on, it also give the plants ferts if you get the realy good stuff. but at least get finet gravel, and get the stuff that is not covered with anything, the more prus usualy the better.

ferts, when i say ferts from the horticulture store, that is usualy for bigger tanks, as they need alot more ferts then smaller tanks, and the stuff from the LFS starts to get realy expensive. it is just powdered potasium nitrate, mono-potasium phosphate, and potasium phosphate. but for at tank your size just get the stuff from the LFS.

for my 5.5 i built my own hood, with two spirale flourecents, and it worked quite well, not i have moved it over to my 15 for some extra light.

My incandescents are on 14 hours a day, 2 of the hours are sunrise, its not in any direct sunlight, the blinds are closed but some light seeps through, it has a bit of a glow before the lights come on. I'm sure two 30 watt bulbs in that hood will be good enough.
