Hi there, I bought this goby from big al's, but when i look up "Steinitz Goby" i dont find anything that looks like him with the yellow face.  he's really camera shy though i think he hates the flash.

A reference book would be helpful, any store will misadvise a tad to make a sale.

I actually wanted a Blue-cheek Goby but settled for this guy cause he might be cooler, and I've never seen the blue-cheek in a store.  I think this guy is a Threadfin Goby

They probably just looked at the wrong tag. I don't see why they would do it on purpose "to make a sale". Sounds liek an honest mistake.

I agree, most likely a simple mistake.

It reminds me when I was buying a pair of apistos, I did not know how to sex them.  So when girl scooping expressed her uncertainty in her ability to sex them as well, I quite openly relieved her of any expectation on my part.  My thought is if I can't sex them, why should I expect someone else to sex them?

I would have the same attitude if I could not identify a fish myself...

I agree mislabelling absolutely.  I just purchased 2 discus from a hobbyiest who imported them.
I know one is as labelled but the other one is not, this is an honest mistake.

In the case of the aquarium store, wouldn't it be nice for everyone to be equally informed.
I agree they come in mislabelled, but it goes beyond that claiming ignorance.
For example, one store on carling are quite informed, but they are still trying to sell and if they intentionally leave out a few facts to make a sale, then this is a sales tactic.
We are still dealing with salespeople when purchasing fish.

E.g.  why would anyone sell me a hawkfish knowing I have shrimp in the same tank?
It would be like selling me a rolls royce knowing I only have 10 bucks for gas per week.

I've come to accept big al's incompetence, some times people just dont know.  when theres a tank thats full of fish and 20 different labels you cant just pick and choose a label and tell the customer that's what it is.  People should admit more and say "i dont know", but they're too arogant to admit it and you end up mislead.  its my fault too i guess, i just wanted a nice goby, didnt do any research.  research is stress, trial and error is key.  its hard to get any real info and know who's right and who's just bs.  for instance the dude at pet circus told me long time ago that Prime is a chemical and it's possible to overdose the tank, whereas cycle can just be thrown in without concern.  makes sense, if you ever read the dosage that prime is powerful stuff, it stinks too.  person at bigal's told me "i love Prime, its perfectly safe and you can put in as much as you want" - theres a topic of discussion for ya.  I guess you gotta look it up, find the answer that the majority of people agree too.  yellownose goby gives results on ebay but threadfin goby seems to be the more common.  I like him he's one of the few things in my tank that dont piss me off.  i dont even feed the tank and he's great, lives off the little bugs and what not.

how much did you pay for him and how much do you want to sell it for, yes wrong label was shown to me too but i use one of their books and show them the real name/pic, problem solved!

one time i got owned by finding the real name which was more expensive  >:(!

lol i guess you're right i do remember getting a deal or two cause they didnt know and i shut my mouth cause i knew i was getting a deal   ;)  you win some, you lose some.  it aint the money though that bothers me (i dont remeber how much he cost), its whether its safe or not in my tank; if they dont know what its called how would they know if it's safe or what it needs to survive.   i dont regret buying him though this goby is cool i picked him because he appealed to me.  he's just "goby" to me.
