Compatability Question

WWW hasn't helped very much so once again I'm turning to our OVAS experts.  After starring at my Krib/Brevis 36gal tank for a while I started to suspect they weren't too compatable,  The Kribs are constantly on the move chasing one another and apparently driving my Brevis a little nuts!  I suspect that this may be why the Brevis haven't spawned yet. Incidently, plenty of rocks, caves etc. for shelter although the Brevis all have homes established in shells.  What do you think?

luvfishies

Entirely possible, as they both hang at the bottom of the tank. The Brevis prefer way harder/higher pH water than the Kribs as well. Not to say the Kribs won't do well, they just may not have great spawns, and your fry will all be one sex.

Have you tried to shelter the shells? Just a suggestion.

Thanks luvfishies, and no Pegasus, I haven't tried sheltering the shells but I will keep that in mind if the "problem" gets more serious.

Nelson,

For my Kribs I found the best thing was a cocconut shell, cut cleaned and then siliconed back with an opening just big enough for the male Krib (I have 5) - found this keeps them in one place if other fish are present - just a note it also seems to REALLY encourage breeding :).

Thanks, I'll give it a try.  Happy New Year!

I'd like to say, that Kribs will use ANY cave: coconut, Terracotta plant pots (I devide them into halves), etc. But also they don't like bare glass ground. I tried several times, but they never breed untill I put some substrate.
And concerning the high hardness -> they will spawn, but the eggs will not be fertilized. I had a pair with Malawi with GH 28 and they tried hard, but was able to get fry only when I put them separatly into tank with water of ~5GH

Good luck!

Very much appreciated, very helpful advice from our Krib expert!.
