I have a 110G tall tank (48"X18"x30") and it is planted (I know its a pain to reach the bottom but I've sorted it out).  I mainly have Java ferns, Spiral Vals and Amazon Swords and all seem to be doing well enough with my CO2 injection and all, but I think they could be doing better.  Seeing that this is a deeper tank and not knowing the exact lighting requirements for these plants, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice that would point me in the right direction as to how many lumens/watts per gallon I would need to give these plants optimum growth parameters.  Any extra tips on lighting (lumens, watts, soft-white, etc.) would greatly be appreciated as well.  Thanks a million...once again.

PineHill... the java ferns are low light plants, and the amazons and vals (assuming you have the generic ones most people have and not some specialty ones) are medium light

In general terms, medium light is between 1.5 to 2.4 WPG.  You, however, have a large and deep tank, so the Watts Per Gallon guideline doesn't work as well.

busdriver has a planted tank with similar dimensions... I'm not sure what he has for lighting over it.  I can tell you what won't work - the standard hood lights that come with that tank.

Are you building your own lights or buying?  What is your budget?

Rex's site helped a lot, thanks for the link.  I'm planning for my 125 gallon setup and I understand everything so far that I've read except where "lux" comes from and what it actually is.  If someone could help me out that would be great. If not I will wait for the Tom Barr chat tonight.  Thanks

Hagen have a new line of T5 HO, I see the product in my friend petshop. It's very good and not really expensive.
