is it anything like this photo? I'm also at a loss. I rinsed the filter media in aquarium water, did a gravel clean, changes 20% of the water, light (2 watts per gallon) are on a timer... help!!
(I hope that this is not thread jacking, because of the title...)

i'm not sure what kind that is but you could try a full black out for a week or so. don't feed the fish and cover every inch of the tank with blankets etc...it should work to eliminate the algae

Lucie here is an article written by Bigdaddy - http://ovas.ca/index.php?page=6

I had an issue with some algae and it worked like a charm... :)

Hi Lucie

That is green water (even though it doesn't look green yet).  Usually, it is something that comes with new planted tanks were there is ammonia present (even amounts smaller than what your test kit measures).

You can try my blackout article as already suggested.  The other method is a diatom filter.  If you go the diatom filter route, leave the filter on a full week AFTER all the algae is cleared out.

I was having trouble with blue Green and a lot of regular algae. I blacked out for 6 days and all the algae is gone. Its been about 2 months and none of it came back.

Lucie

Thanks guys...
I guess it just scared me to do a blackout, but now I'm convinced. I'll do the prep (50% water change, last feeding and wrapping) monday night. I guess the "reveal" will be saturday... After I unwrap, I guess I should change or rinse the wool in the filter.
Can't wait to see the end result :)

I wanted to lift the blanket 100s or more times... but I didn't... all was well!

Just out of curiosity, how long do you leave your lights on?  Shortening the light cycle by an hour can solve green water problems. Worked on one of my new planted tanks a while ago, cleared up the green water problem in about a week - went from pea soup to crystal clear.
Rainbows, plecos, corydoras, killifish, Apistogramma

Lucie

Hi, I have the lights on for 12 hours a day. I started at 8, then slowly increased to 12.
I think I will do a blackout starting tonight, up to saturday (reveal day), I will then try to have lights on for 10 hours a day after that, thanks for the advice. I will have reduces feeding (twice in the first week, suggested by Charlie) I'm confident now about the blackout. FISHEYE was over today and couldn't believe how fluorescent green the tank was. He also commented about how wonderfully well the plants are doing.
More on saturday. I'm gonna go wrap the tank now :(
Goodnight fishes and plants zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Lucie

Today's the big day!!!!
Here's a couple of pics of the tank after the unwrapping. I let them acclimatize for 15 minutes before I turned on the lights, the I took these photos... Yippee!
I will now proceed to do a big water change to remove the dead algae. Thanks to everybody that convinced me to do the right thing!  :)
I can't wait to meet you guys at the meeting!

Nice now I can see your entire tank great aquascaping! :) Now say, "I believe..."  8)

PS- any peeking?

No Peeking! I had the tank covered with my black vinyl tablecloth, ducktaped nicely, so it looked discreet and didn't taunt me as much! I really wanted this to succeed!
Thanks! Dan, Do you recognize some of your plants? They're big now!
Lucie

BigDaddy

Good job.  Nice free solution, isn't it?

Lucie

Thanks, BigDaddy! Your article explained very well what to do. Charlie also helped a lot with concerns and advice. If it wasn't for OVAS, I would have gotten discouraged at such cloudy results... Now I'm very happy and impressed. You Rock!

Very nice tank setup!!!! I'm impressed.  I wish my tanks looked anything like that : )

Lucie

Thanks guys... As for the driftwood, I bought 1 big piece at SP Orleans, and the rest came as a gift from Zoe & FISHEYE. Some of the plants were supplied partly by Zoe, Dan2x38, dpatte...

charlie

Hi Lucie , glad it all worked out.
