Karen Randall certainly made a no-nonsense approach to the balance of an aquarium, it was an enlightening oration to say the least.  I like that she links to the krib regarding calculating CO2 levels without a CO2 testing kit.  http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/kh-ph-co2-chart.html
