Not sure if this has been brought up before but whats everyone's opinion on having a thread say in the SW Discussion/FW Discussion with a monthly featured tank profile.  Every month a different member would be chosen either my the members or executives by some sort of system.  This would give everyone a chance to show off their tanks, explain their setups, what kind of maintance they do.  Kind of like the reef central tank of the month thread.  Just so everyone can see other peoples systems and learn from peoples mistakes, etc.  Just a though.

+1000  it's been discussed time and again...  I would assume this would need executive support and action.

It's a great/fantastic idea.  Not sure what the issues would be on this, I would imagine at the very-least someone would have to be appointed to manage/administer the process, though IMO that same person would NOT have to be on the OVAS executive... just a volunteer.

Another way you could do it is just start a new section called "pic of the month" or "tank of the month" and let people add their own thread to it as they please, and then have people vote on the best post. Most votes wins.

I do like this.  Just like reef central.  Have a thread dedicated to the feature tank, then for a month, everyone could post 3 pics of their tank in the thread.  Just like the photo contest, at the end there would be a poll.  Once the winner has been decided, that person would be given a certain amount of time to do an informative write up of his tank, explaining everything from history, equipment, livestock(fish/corals), lessons learned, etc.... This would allow people to see other members tanks, get some ideas for their own setups, and learn from other peoples mistakes.  I know myself personally, I look forward to the Reef Central TOTM thread and hopefully this forum will do something similar.

Just my opinion however its up the executives for this......

There in lies the call to action...  Given there are elections and what-not going on, it might take more time than we would like.

Even if it turns around immediately I would still assume we need someone to manage this process.  Creating new threads each month, setting up the polls, starting/ending the polling times, notifying the winners, posting the write ups, etc... and of course, web-admin time needs to be accounted for as I'm sure we'd need some support there would we not?

I'm 100% in support of this BTW, just trying to keep expectations realistic is all. :)

I find a managed tank-of-the-month thread is a great idea, something that has not been suggested like that. I am sure that we can come up with something and appreciate that you are already showing a little patience here. :) With summer coming I don't want to promise anything to early, but I am working on an update of this site and a featured tank section will be on top of the list. For the time being we could use the ordinary thread style.

How would you choose someone to present their tank?
be aware of the green side

We could do a photo contest but instead of 1 photo, you get to post 2 pics.  One has to be a FTS (full tank shot) and the other is up to the member.  At the end of the month, a poll would be started and voted.  The winner would then be given a certain appropriate time period to do his tank write-up and then start a thread for it.  And then the process starts over a again.  Maybe for now, we can create a sticky and achieve and the past feature tanks so they don't go missing and people can find them easily.  Once you have won, your out.  The winner would discuss topics such as:
-History (a few paragraphs explaining how that person got into the hobby, their history in the hobby, and how the tank has come to what it is now)
-Equipment
     -Filtration
     -Circulation
     -Lighting
-Maintaince
     -General Maintaince
     -Supplements used/Dosing methods
     -Feeding
     -Water Parameters
-Livestock
     -Fish
     -Corals
-Lessons Learned
-Acknowledgements (Thanks to someone.....)

Obviously some sort of categories would have to be made for freshwater/salt or both could be done together.  I would prefer to see them split so everyone gets an equal opportunity to display their tank.

I like this alot.  I would like a single take of the month... and here's why... helps me (a salty) see what you fresh-heads are doing... kinda creates a brackish water in my mind... haha....

we could alternate one time is fresh, next it's salt..etc...  8) 8) 8)

Vincenzo.

i like both ideas, but to me the problem would be we would end up running out of tanks quickly? that would be 4 tanks a month, or 4 people a month posting their 1+ tanks? there are only so many active members. only so many people have cameras. only so many people host pictures. i think there are more fresh than salts. personally i think everyone sign there name on a picking order list and each month a few people are picked (displaying one tank only). then a winner is decided. then after the year. a winner is decided from all winners? i dont know i have a few other ideas..

As above we only asked for 1 tank a month..........

o sorry, i have difficulty following directions, let along reading them i guess :D

I like this idea.  I don't think it should alternate between fresh and salt, but rather have the best aquarium regardless of type win for the month.
150 Gallon Mbuna: 2 M. baliodigma, 5 Ps. sp. "Deep Magunga", 3 L. caeruleus, 3 Ps. demasoni, 1 P. Spilotonus 'Albino Taiwan Reef', 2 C. afra "Cobue", 2 Ancistrus sp.-144, 5 Ps. Acei, 1 Albino Ancistrus spp. L-144, Various fry

20 Gallon Long Reef: 1 Gramma melacara, 1 Pseudocheilinus hexataenia, 2 Lysmata amboinensis, 2 Lysmata wurdemanni, snails, hermits, crabs, mushrooms, SPS, rare zoanthids, palythoas, ricordea, favites, cloves, acans, candycanes leathers

Why couldn't we do a fresh water tank-of-the-month and a salt water tank-of-the-month each month?

I don't see why we need to make this a competition with a winner(s). I like the idea of a sign-up sheet. Anyone interested submits their nomination with a single FTS for consideration. To qualify for the tank-of-the-month short list - at least three (or two. or whatever) other members must second the nomination - this way, we are seeing tanks of strongest interest first as opposed to just any old tank. As the short list is exausted, another call is issued for nominations and so on and so forth.

Short-listed candidates are contacted and asked to committ to a deadline for thread content submission. Fresh/Salt water tank-of-the-month threads can be posted in the order that they are received from the tank owners.

My 2 cents.

Thats what I was thinking too.  We're not a reef society, we're an aquarium society so both fresh and salt should be feature and most people want to see the best/nicest aquariums rather than a new 1 or 2 month system.   I think it would benefit the members greatly for people starting their builds or looking to upgrade tanks and gives people a chance to learn some additional info beforehand.

well however it gets setup, i say good stuff!  I'm glad to see it being setup.  The details can be debated once it's setup and running, no?  It's not so important right now what is the "best" way, but going from nothing to something is the challenge.

tskinner, looks like you got nominiated... good job man, congrats... where do we start?
