Seems HD has begun to market a larger variety of LED lighting. My electrician buddy just picked up some new LED bulbs for a job he's doing. We tried one at home and I think, for the price, they're amazing. It's a unit designed to replace those Par 20 miniature floodlight bulbs you typically see in track lighting. It only has four LEDs but the brightness is unbelievable; you can't look directly at it. May be the same technology they're using in those new 6X and 12X brighter landscape lights. According to the package, they have a colour temp of 4200K but they seem whiter than that to me. These are cool white but they're also available in something called soft white. They contain no mercury and are supposed to last 40,000 hours which works out to about ten years at six to eight hours per day. I have no idea how they would work on a SW setup but after seeing the effect they create beaming across my workshop, I'll be putting two above my 30 gallon crayfish tank. Of course, the big bonus with these units is little or no heat. The part of the unit containing the electronics does get warm, but not overly hot. Energy consumption is 7 watts and they're designed to replace a 35w incandesent or halogen bulb.

They are made by Philip's Lighting, cost $30 a pop and are called AmbientLED. model is 7W R20.

Here's a link to a similar bulb at HD. They don't list the 7W on their website. I expect this one would work quite well also but it requires a special socket/fixture.

I was intrigued by your post and went to check them out.
The only thing I didn't like was the Lumen output on the LED bulbs. The highest rating we found on one of the packages was just over 200 Lumens.
When you compare them to a screw in compact florescent at 900 Lumens, the output seems a bit low for my liking.
Would love to see one running.
Maybe I will just have to break down and replace a bulb in my house to decide :)

I agree that they probably wouldn't be that great in a high light demand setup. I haven't bought one myself yet but I will. I tried out two of the ones my buddy had at home over a 30 gal Metaframe which is home to a huge Blue Crayfish. I think it's 18" deep. Looked fantastic in that application. I tried getting a picture but it really didn't show well. Once I get a permanent fixture in place I'll try again and post some pics.
