These two were bought at big al's oakville.  They were sold to me as a male and female electric blue haplochromis.  I believe the scientific name is (or was) Sciaenochromis fryeri.  The male is about 4" long, the female is about 2-1/2".   Can anyone confirm that this is indeed the species?   Also, the clerk at BA spent some time sexing the female, and is convinced that it is a female, but after I got the pair home, I noticed she has egg spots on her anal fin.  Is this possible for a female?  (I would have got one or two more females, but this one was the only one the clerk could positively identify).  Thanks in advance.

Egg spots are not a good indicator of gender.  Many of my females have egg spots.

The first looks like a Sciaenochromis fryeri to me.  Can't help you with the second one tho, not familiar enough with the species.

They both seem to be Sciaenochromis fryeri. The fryeri have a slender body than most other peacocks. The second picture shows a female if both are of similar size, othewise a sub-dominant male would have shown some blue (specialy with the use of the flash)

And yes a beautiful male!

Thanks for your help.
I suspect that the Clerk at BA knew what he was talking about, but the eggspots got me (mistakenly) wondering.
I think he's beautiful too, but he does seem to spend a lot of time hiding in rock caves.  He is in a 40 breeder with the female, a small pleco, and a zebra danio.  Do you think maybe he's lonely?

No, just give him time to get to know your scarry face. :D and the different sounds of the house. There's nothing to scare him in the tank.
