So I got bored one day and decided to make a filter "sock" for the drain on my main display tank.  Attached are a few pictures so you can see how I did it.

It just sits in place and can be removed easily.  The pipe on the bottom is for flow direction so I can control how I want it to move the water around in my fuge since there are no power heads in that tank.

Items List:

2L Pop bottle cut.
Random PVC fittings I had laying around
Eggcrate
Zip Ties
Cotton Batting from Walmart
100% Polyester

Creative for sure, but you should use polyester
from a cheap walmart pillow, it's totally inert.
Some cotton batting is bleached..

Or, the 100% polyester stuffing from Wal*Mart, sold in a 1lb bag, and no need to remove it from a pillow.

Sorry, just looked at the bag I have.  It is 100% polyester.

I'm a little confused. How does the diverter at the bottom work? Why doesn't the water (or, at least most of it) just flow through the bottom eggcrate?

Edit: Got it now. Just had to make the pic a little bigger - old eyes, I guess. ::)

How often do you change the floss?  Do you rinse and reuse, or toss it?

Usually toss it.  Gets pretty crummy and for the price of a bag from walmart $3.00-$5.00 or something like that it lasts a long time.
I check for Starfish / Snails first however.  I have cause 1-2 in there before.
