HOB fuge

I have a aquaclear 70 DIY fuge on my tank for a few months now.  Just wondering if I should clean it or not.

new charcoal every three months.
if you are using wool or some other type trap for filtering the water - get rid of it.
it's a nitrate bomb waiting to go boom.
