If I were you, i would visit some of the local pet shops for ideas,.. also thumb through some of the tropical fish books....Dicus are beautiful and very stately fish,.. I would have lots of slate faned out against one side in the back,.. one large chunk of drift wood standing with a smaller one laying in front... Plants,.. I would use lots of the tall and short saggitarius, with some large amazon type .... use some sand white with pea gravel walmart sell,..the beige color.....     As far as filters and heater the pet store will advise you , I think any type of sponge filter is great for a 30 gal...
Thats my ideas,.. theres a very nice lady (see posts) in the club " Julie".. she has discus , and my have some suggestions for you..      Good luck ,... John
PS, nows the time to look for large chunks of drift wood in ponds and lakes.. someone with a cottage could perhaps bring back a chunk or two...

Discus are probably not ideal for a 33 gal, at least once they're adult. You could use it as a growout, but full grown discus are very large and need probably at least a 75 for a small group.

Yeah, I would not suggest a 33G plant tank for discus also. I've a 75G plant tank, with 5 discus. 1 large, 3 med and 1 small size. 33G seems a bit small, unless you just have 2 adults in it. in terms of plants, look for something can stand high temp (like 30C or above). There was one time I need to set the temp to very high in order to treat some disease, and some of the plants die afterward.
