So I just got everything planted. The plants look great. The only plant that seems to have been a little beaten up by shipping are the 2 shinnersia rivularis weiss grun. They're looking a little ratty but I think they'll come back.

Thanks again Rebecca.

You are more than welcome. It was great getting to meet a bunch of new people in the club.

Yes the weiss grun did not travel too well. Many who ordered it commented on the leaves melting etc. The good news is that all the plants have substantial root development, so the weiss grun should recover.

Sweet idea.............i tell ya.............getting the HC out the rock wool, i think that is what it is called. But anyhoo getting it out of there was sure the tricky part, took me like 1 hour to get it out.

I love the HC..........wee. My gosh if i can keep this growing, i gotta treat myself to a prize. Updates will precede in a matter of couple weeks.

When everyone gets their plants planted we should all post picks of our tropica plants!
Well on Rebecca`s suggestion here we go, feel free to add yours here.
The first Picture shows the Utricularia graminifolia  in front/foreground
Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'  mid ground
Nesaea crassicaulis  at the back

These are in my 58 gallon Hagen with 3 T5 54 watts bulbs, eco-complete,co2 & ferts

The second pic shows the Nesaea pedicellata at the very back.
The third is the Proserpinaca palustris "cuba"/mermaid weed at the back
These 2 are in my 75 gln , 4 XT5 54 watt , Flourite red , CO2 , ferts, This tank had a total uprooting & trimming & rescaping yesterday, now comes the waiting game of growth  ;)

Well when they call this plant a fast grower.....they're not kidding. It already looks way better than when I planted it 2 days ago. It's definitely coming around. It's a really neat plant with amazing colour. Its colour is very different from most of the plants we see for the aquarium. I haven't had time to get some photos yet of my new plants but when I do I'll add them to Charlie's post.

Yea it`s a very fast growing plant i remember the first time i took some to the auction, the  auctioneer of the night asked me where did i find it & if i`m sure it was aquatic, i had picked up on impulse from Superpet.

My Nesaea crassicaulis  is really responding well, already i think this is going to be my favourite plant of the order, on Wed. when i sot a pic of it it was all green, this morning when the lights kicked on i noticed the plant has already grown some & starting to colour up, wow.

Yeah it really does look like a non-aquatic plant that you find at the stores sometimes. It's really unique. I can't wait for it to grow and fill in the area that I planted it in.

I'm really disappointed. My weiss grun is completely dead. Not even a week later and it's mush.
How is everyone else's?

Jeff1192

Mine is growing like a weed. It took a day or 2 to start coming around but it's growing really well now!

It looks like my pl*co was having a good chew on it...  >:(

I have just moved it to the cherry shrimp tank, I think it should be fine there. I wouldn't thow yours out quite yet - if the top of the stems are still good you can replant them, if not, cut everything off and leave the root-ball in the tank, they will sometimes start to grow again.

mine had no root ball. the stems are all mush. I have it floating hoping it might grow roots again

I told Rudy the Tropica guy about how poorly the weiss grun shipped.  He said that he would "make up for it" in our next order. I am not really sure what "make up for it" will mean, but he was concerned that the weiss grun did not arrive in good condition.

Patricia: I am sure that one of the others who ordered the weiss grun will give a few stems once their's recovers and becomes more established....there's lots of good will amongst us Tropica-clan!

At the rate mine is growing I will have trimmings in a few weeks. I'll let people know when I have some ready.

I didn't get very much but the plants I did get are doing well.  They're actually still in the Amano Shrimp cleaning station..just in case :).  You guys will just have to wait until the Home Show video night to see my plants :)

it's just my weiss grun. Everything else is doing great. :-[

Wish there were more hours in a day, or less tanks to care for....scratch that, more hours!
I'm really falling behind; a new grandchild (at home), preparing the house for sale, buying a new house, work (a new project to manage) aargghhh!

To date;
I picked up the plants from Rebecca, still in great shape after an extra two days in the bags, and put the plants in the tank. I really do look forward to beginning the aquascaping. The cycling seems to have worked, all levels good. I took 6 ghost shrimp out of one of the invert tanks and moved them over. They love riding the current and keeping the leaves clean. The Proserpinaca palustris "Cuba" is even starting to colour up.

The 55g Project;

55g tank - 36X18X20
Filter - Magnum HOT
2 bags Fluorite Black
1 bag Fluorite Red
1 bag Fluorite Sand
Manzanita wood - still floating like a cork in with the Cichlids  >:(

Lights - T5's = 159W
2 Coralife 2 bulb 39W + 21W
1 CoralifeHO 1 Bulb 39W (will get a HO bulb soon)
Planned - To build a DIY 3 or 4 HO bulb unit, the above units are needed on other tanks

CO2
2 DIY Generators on a 20 day cycle / changing alternately every 10 days, sitting in a small insulated bucket with a 50W heater @ 76 degrees F.  producing a steady 1 BPS
DIY Powerhead Reactor with mods - thanks charlie, works better than expected!
Planned - Will move to pressurized in new house

Plants
6 plants - Tropica order
several other interesting species that will be kept
-many extra plants at the moment to assist with cycling

Fauna
6 Ghost Shrimp
-will gradually add a school of Harlequins or Green Neons, trio of German Rams, BN or other pleco (undecided on species) and a group of red & green dwarf shrimp. No snails, I hope.

Needed; TIME TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER!!!

Goal; To learn a few things now because the new house has a 18' long wall in the rec room begging for a 60X24X24 built-in. ;D ;D Also enough room for the 90g cichlid and this 55g :D

Looking good, Hank! I can see it turning into a very nice project. One thing that I noticed in the picture: the suspiciously blue colour of the CO2 drop checker - you really want it to be a nice yellow-ish green (and I realise you're on DIY CO2, but it might just not be enough). You know what low CO2 levels mean for our best friend algae :). Also, when I set up a new tank, I always stuff it with fast-growing stem and other plants. Or, to use charlie's expression  ;D, I "suffocate the new set-up with fast-growing plants" to ensure a balanced uptake of nutrients. Once I notice sufficient growth, I slowly remove the fast-growing plants and replace them with the ones I want to aquascape with (in case the initial ones just didn't do it for me). All that happens, of course, with a slow introduction of EI ferts. You've got an excellent lighting system and a nice mix of substrate; now ensure adequate levels of CO2 and ferts (only when there is sufficient growth in the tank), and you're on your way! Just my $0.02... Good luck, looking forward to pictures!
