Anybody knows where (and what brand)  I can find cheep aquarium safe silicone?

ALPARENT

WalMart DAP 100% clear silicone.

Not the bathroom stuff because is has some mildew killing chimicals and you don't want that.

Canadian tire has it- you'll have to read the back to see...I cant remember which product # it is!

Brent

go to home depot and look for GE Silicone I, General Purpose, Clear, 85ml its $3.46

Canadian Tire's Mastercraft clear silicone is stated aquarium safe, I have used it many times, good stuff.

Do not use GE silicone II for kitchen and bathroom, it killed a dozen of my cichlids in a few days.

Iceman

According to the GE Silicone and Adhesives website, under the faq section, they do not recommend any of their products for aquarium use.

I'm not saying it is unsafe, just simply passing on what GE says.

Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 19:31:16 EST Thanks to all who answered my post. Here is the response from GE."We don't recommend any of our products for underwater submersion, but some aquarium manufacturers do choose to use our products on glass to glass aquariums. The products they use most often are RTV108 or IS808. These are industrial grade products. Our consumer grade (this means they would be found in Home Depot or a local hardware store) offset to these industrial products is GE012A ( Window and Door Silicon 1) The product should be completely cured before putting the finished product to use. The recommended time frame is 7-10 days."Denise

Marx

In case anyone is confused when they're in the store, make sure you get the BLUE tube of GE Silicone I.  There is also a RED tube which also says "GE Silicone I 100% rubber adhesive" but the red tube has mildewcide in it (which makes you wonder how they can call it "100%"...)

Anyway, I use the Blue tube stuff and it works well.

Iceman

Cool.  :D  That is exactly the stuff I have. I guess maybe GE would prefer not to recommend it rather than deal with lawsuits should it fail.

Waterproofs seals and insulates. Adheres to wood glass steel aluminum plastic and vinyl. Help save energy. Remains flexible. Clear can be used on aquarium and kitchen. 2 minute tool time/24 hour cure time.

from the link above..

Apparantly GE stopped calling it "aquarium safe" simply because they didn't want to go through the hassle and expense of testing that purpose any more.  And probably because too many yahoo's "sealed" their aquariums improperly and they got tired of dealing with them.

You can always go to your LFS and ask for a tube of stuff marked "Aquarium safe" (I saw a tube at SP Kanata but didn't examine it closely), but you'll pay in the range of $14+ for a tube.

Pisidan

GE Silicone I used to be called Aquarium silicone years back but for legal reason they removed it from the label!! I have used it Dozens of times on my aquriums and to make stufff with it with no ill effects!

Marx

man whe should get a stick that says

GE Silicone I 100% Rubber Adhesive is aquarium safe
Disclaimer:
Do not use GE silicone I with mildew resistant properties or your fish and inverts will die. use only GE silicone I 100% without any additives. Let cure for atleast 72 hours before adding water.
Use at own RISK. GE is not liable for crappy silicone jobs. So do it right and take your time.

hehe I like it!  I want a T-shirt that says that for when I attend my first OVAS meeting X=)
